AI Agents Are the New Insider Threat

Nearly half of cybersecurity professionals now rank agentic AI as the #1 attack vector for 2026. Here's what that means for your business — and what you need to do about it.

A new Dark Reading poll just confirmed what a lot of security leaders have quietly been dreading: 48% of cybersecurity professionals now rank agentic AI as the single most dangerous attack vector heading into 2026. That's not a niche concern. That's nearly half the industry pointing at the same thing and saying, "this is the one we're worried about."

If you're a business leader who has been hearing the AI productivity pitch — deploy AI agents, automate workflows, scale without adding headcount — this is the other side of that conversation. And it's one most vendors won't lead with.

What Is an AI Agent, and Why Should You Care?

AI agents aren't like the chatbots you've been using for customer support. Those answer questions. Agents act. They execute tasks, make decisions, access your CRM, send emails, pull reports, move files, and talk to third-party systems — all with minimal human oversight. That's the value proposition. You give an agent a job, it does the job.

Here's the problem: to do their job, AI agents need permissions. Access to email systems, customer databases, financial records, HR platforms. Often broad permissions, because the agent needs flexibility to complete complex tasks. And those permissions don't disappear when the task is done. They persist. They accumulate. Every agent you deploy becomes what the security industry is now calling a "non-human identity" — a persistent entity with access rights, running inside your environment, operating autonomously.

Legacy security systems were built to manage human identities. They weren't designed for this.

The Insider Threat You Didn't Hire

Here's where it gets genuinely unsettling. Proofpoint's security researchers are now predicting that by the end of 2026, autonomous AI copilots may surpass human employees as the primary source of data leaks inside enterprises.

Not because the AI is malicious. Because it inherits whatever access problems already exist in your environment. Over-permissioned file shares. Outdated access rules nobody cleaned up after an employee left. Documents that were never properly classified. Your AI agent will dutifully surface sensitive information to users who were never supposed to see it — because the access control that was supposed to stop that was never set correctly.

And that's just the accidental exposure scenario. Security researchers are already documenting a more deliberate attack: "prompt injection." An attacker embeds malicious instructions in content your AI agent will read — a document, an email, a web page. The agent, following instructions as designed, exfiltrates data, forwards emails to external addresses, or opens access pathways it was never supposed to touch. The agent isn't hacked in the traditional sense. It's been manipulated. It thinks it's doing its job.

The Shadow AI Problem Is Already Here

The official AI agents your IT team deployed are only part of the picture. Ivanti's 2026 State of Cybersecurity Report found that 87% of security teams say adopting agentic AI is a priority — but the employees who are already experimenting with unsanctioned AI tools aren't waiting for IT to get there first.

Shadow AI — employees plugging in third-party AI agents without security review, without IT approval, without governance — is already inside most organizations. These tools get access to whatever the employee has access to. And when that employee handles customer data, financial information, or intellectual property, so does the tool. More than one-third of data breaches now involve shadow data: unmanaged data sources that security teams don't even know exist. Add unsanctioned AI to the mix and you compound that risk dramatically.

Three Things Every Business Leader Should Do Now

First, get a clear picture of what AI agents are actually operating in your environment. You almost certainly have more than you think. Before you can secure them, you have to find them — including the unofficial ones your employees have been quietly running for months.

Second, apply the principle of least privilege to every AI agent you authorize. Ask a simple question: what does this agent actually need access to in order to do its job? Then grant exactly that — nothing more. An AI agent automating your marketing reports does not need access to payroll systems. Build those boundaries deliberately, not by default.

Third, start treating AI agents as identities that require ongoing monitoring. Not just setup and forget. Their behavior should be logged, reviewed, and subject to anomaly detection. If an AI agent that normally sends five emails a day suddenly sends five hundred, you want to know about it — and you want to know before the data is already gone.

The Bottom Line

AI agents will create real business value. I'm not arguing against deploying them. But the security architecture that governed your workforce last year was built for humans. AI agents play by different rules — they move faster, they don't get tired, they don't question suspicious instructions, and they have the access your human employees gave them.

2026 will separate the organizations that treated AI governance as a security priority from those that treated it as a compliance checkbox. The attackers have already figured out which side they want to be on.
